Turning Point Counseling - Turning Point - a point where a decisive change takes place
Annika Pangan
Master of Social Work Intern
(630) 723-4932

We’re excited to introduce you to our Social Work Intern, Annika Pangan!  Annika is currently completing her Master Degree in Social Work (MSW) at Aurora University, and she has taken a special interest in learning more about working with the LGBTQ+ community.  She has over 20 years of experience working with individuals and families in the context of mental health services, caregiving, homelessness programs and shelters, and domestic violence services (to name a few!).  Annika has demonstrated a commitment to helping others and providing support through advocacy, mental health counseling, group facilitation, teaching life skills, accessing housing resources, and demonstrated leadership skills.

“Working in these areas, I have realized that service providers across a variety of settings are often not up-to-date in regards to being LGBTQ+ inclusive and affirming.  Being “LGBT-friendly” isn’t enough.  I’ve become more aware of the limited resources available to the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in the suburbs.  I believe it’s important to empower people and create safe spaces for all.  No one should have to compromise who they are to receive competent, comprehensive, and compassionate services that are tailored to the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as to you as a unique individual.  You should be able to feel respected, understood, and supported.

As part of my internship, I want to develop safe community partnerships so that no matter what resources are needed, you will know where to turn.  Everyone has an individual journey and for those who are transgender and transitioning, I’m hoping to walk beside you in your transition – whether that’s assisting with the legal name change process, accessing medical resources, providing counseling, or providing advocacy around school and workplace rights – I want you to feel like you don't have to do it alone.  I also hope to develop a group for parents of trans* individuals to increase support, provide education, and help connect people with others who have similar experiences.

I feel fortunate to do my internship at Turning Point Counseling. I’m excited to increase my awareness and learn more about the LGBTQ+ community and local resources; and I look forward to meeting you!”

Annika earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Northern Illinois University.  She has received Trauma-informed training and holds a 40-hour Domestic Violence Certification.  Annika has also been actively involved in Rotary, a network of individuals whose mission is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.
